This was one of the books I’ve had on my TBR for the longest, and I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it. But Naila’s vacation turns into a nightmare when she learns that plans have changed-her parents have found her a husband and they want her to marry him, now! Despite her greatest efforts, Naila is aghast to find herself cut off from everything and everyone she once knew. Convinced she has forgotten who she truly is, they travel to Pakistan to visit relatives and explore their roots. When Naila breaks their rule by falling in love with Saif, her parents are livid. And until then, dating-even friendship with a boy-is forbidden. Following their cultural tradition, they will plan an arranged marriage for her. Naila’s conservative immigrant parents have always said the same thing: She may choose what to study, how to wear her hair, and what to be when she grows up-but they will choose her husband. 6/29/2023 0 Comments John waters museumIt’s only fitting that the fruits of my 60-year search for new art that could startle, antagonize, and infuriate even me, ends up where it all began-in my hometown museum. Waters got his start as an art collector at the age of 12: he spent $2 on a Joan Miró poster in the Baltimore Museum’s gift shop:Īfter taking it home and hanging it on my bedroom wall at my parents’ house, I realized from the hostile reaction of my neighborhood playmates that art could provoke, shock, and cause trouble. But he is surely the most famous, thanks to a career that spans six decades, includes numerous books and exhibitions of his photography and sculptures, in addition to his infamous cult films. The first is the lack of build-up to the romance that forms the core of the story. Though I enjoyed Scavenge the Stars, there are two major weaknesses that prevent it from being a five-star read for me. The result is a solid, satisfying tale, though I was not as impressed as I thought I ought to be for what was one of the year’s first big YA fantasy releases. In the end, I think the theme of revenge is likely to greatest parallel to The Count of Monte Cristo, with the story eventually becoming its own as Cayo and Amaya are drawn together and begin to uncover secrets about the city in which they live. The story does, I think, diverge from there, however, with a side plot focused on Amaya’s love interest, Cayo, who finds himself entrapped by the Slum King when he tries to save his sister from a mysterious illness. Then she decides to take on the identity of a countess in order to avenge herself upon the man she blames for her suffering. Amaya is sold as a child to a debtor ship and must work there for years before her release. I have not read The Count of Monte Cristo in many years, so cannot comment on how close the parallels might be. Tara Sim’s Scavenge the Stars is being marketed as a gender-swapped fantasy retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo. 6/29/2023 0 Comments The dispossessed coverWhy Should I Choose Write Paper For Me As My School Assistant?Ī quick Google search will unearth dozens of do-my-paper services, adding to your stress, instead of alleviating it. And nowadays, it’s as easy as typing “Make an essay for me” in live chat. Luckily, you don’t have to suffer in silence or give up on your dream of a college degree. You’re not alone, and it’s perfectly normal to struggle in a new environment and buckle under the weight of elevated expectations. So don’t feel bad if your thoughts go from “Can someone write my paper?” to “Write me a paper asap!” within the first few weeks of the college term. If you try to stay on top of all your responsibilities, you’ll likely burn out or suffer an anxiety attack sooner rather than later. You will soon forget about your plans to discover the party scene, visit your parents every other weekend, or find your soulmate on campus. Not only is it your first attempt at independent life free from parents’ oversight, but it’s also a completely new level of academic requirements and independent study many aren’t ready for.Īnd if you’re an overachiever or a perfectionist, keeping up with all the classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and side gigs will keep you up most nights. After all, college is an eye-opening experience for most students. If you’re suddenly wondering, “Can someone do my paper for me?”, there’s likely a very good reason for that. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Book review of rules of civilityThe daughter of a Russian immigrant, she never denies her background and that she is among “the working class,” but finds herself socializing with a privileged group of people (white, rich and sophisticated). Kate, who narrates the novel, is at first in a secretarial pool at a successful law firm, but quickly moves on to become a secretary at a trendy magazine. An accident abruptly changes their relationship and the direction of their lives. A solid friendship forms and the three of them share many enjoyable times together. Kate Kontent and her roommate Eve meet wealthy Tinker Gray at a jazz club on New Year’s Eve. The story begins in 1966 but quickly turns back to New Year’s Eve, 1939. Amor Towles’ debut novel, Rules of Civility is a captivating period piece that takes place in New York City, particularly in Manhattan. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Rendezvous in Paris by Vicki BaumIf you thought a story centred on a 92-year old protagonist was bound to be dull and depressing, think again. It is also the second “Publisher” themed post on this blog, the first one on Fitzcarraldo Editions – The Best of the Blues – has turned out to be quite popular based on stats. I started reading NYRB Classics more than a decade ago, and have read some great books all these years, but for the purpose of this post I have deliberately narrowed it down to the last 5 years, and selected books I’ve loved within this period. After my trip, I have yet to get into the groove of writing individual book reviews, so have decided to put up this themed post instead, this time on some of my favourite NYRB Classics titles in the last five years. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Mirror mirror reverso poemsThe characters are representations of ourselves, demonstrating traits that we either already see in ourselves or those we want to learn: bravery, independence, creativity, persistence. The characters are vague on purpose, allowing us to fill them with our own interpretations and foist our own personalities onto them. We use them as ways to relate to the world at large and to draw hope in dire situations. Children and adults alike tend to have a deep connection fairy tales. Poetry and folk literature are frequently required standards for the classroom, and many struggle to find appropriate and interesting resources for these units. In Mirror, Mirror, Marilyn Singer accomplished several feats of literary aptitude: she deftly melds the genres of poetry and folk literature, she creates a new form of poetry, and she defies the stereotype of poetry as inaccessible and boring. 6/28/2023 0 Comments 50s Fashion by Jim Heimann1950s Women’s Shorts and Rompers – 1950s shorts, culottes, capri styles.1950s Women’s Pants – Capri pants and more from the 1940s and 1950s styles.1950s Skirts– Poodle skirts, circle skirts, pencil skirts for teens and women.1950s Tops, Shirts, Blouses – Learn all about the different styles.1950s Wedding Dresses, Shoes – History of ’50s weddings attire. The Hostess Dress – I Love Lucy sported this dress over capri set.1950s Women’s Suits History and Pictures.1950s Formal and Prom Dress History- Evening and party dresses.1950s Pencil, Wiggle, Sheath Dresses – A closer look at the slim silhouette.1950s Dress Styles– for day and afternoon looks.1950s House Dresses and Aprons – History of the humble housewife’s uniform.1950s Fabrics and Fashion Colors – What colors were popular in the 50s?.Guide to 1950s Women’s Fashion – An infographic and guide to creating a 1950s look.1950s Women’s Fashion History – An introduction to fashions changes in the 1950s.
